Joey Thieman is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter based in Boston, MA. His forthcoming album “Letters, Words, Sentences, Songs” is a culmination of his years of experience exploring and performing in different musical genres, artfully weaving together influences from folk, jazz, and rock for an original take on the age-old story of love and loss.
Before moving to Boston, Joey was based in Louisville, KY where he performed with acts such as Mark Charles, Carly Johnson, Relaay (formerly Bridge 19), the Drew Miller Trio, Curio Key Club, Billy Goat Strut Revue, Dawn Landes, Houndmouth, Bonnie Prince Billy, Wax Fang, Jill Barber and Hot Sauce Brass Band. He has played at Forcastle, Forest Festival, WFPK Waterfront Wednesdays, and Mountain Stage.
Joey’s formal background is in jazz trumpet and piano. His piano trio, the Joey Thieman Trio, can be found playing at Aeronaut Brewery in Somerville, MA. He can also be spotted playing accordion, piano or guitar at gypsy jazz brunch, solo piano dinner entertainment, or backing up friends on drums, guitar, or trumpet. He holds a Master of Music in Performance from the University of Louisville and Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Morehead State University, where he studied piano with Steve Snyder and trumpet with Greg Wing.
Joey currently teaches private and group lessons at the John Payne Music School in Brookline MA, Music Go Round in Natick MA, and the All Newton Music School in Newton MA. He teaches piano, trumpet, drums, guitar, bass, ukulele and accordion .
